Griffin was appointed by Bloomington mayor John Hamilton to serve as deputy mayor starting in late April of 2021. Griffin resigned the deputy mayorship in 2022, when he resigned to run for the Democratic Party's nomination for mayor. The three-way primary race between Kerry Thomson, Sandberg, and Griffin was won by Thomson.
